Files on form in round five at Thruxton

Team Pyro’s Josh Files started his weekend at Thruxton in fine form, transferring a second place qualifying effort, into a second place finish in round five of the AirAsia Renault Clio Cup, on a damp Hampshire circuit.

Despite leapfrogging Team Pyro teammate Adam Bonham at the start, the driver, backed as part of Direct Debit’s Big Break campaign, followed 2011 title contender James Colburn, into Allard for the first time.

The pair instantly began to break away from the identical pack of Clio Cup racers in the early stages of the race, with Files hot on the heels of Colburn, looking for every opportunity to find his way past his championship counterpart.

Files’ commanding pace soon showed on lap four, with the 21 year old setting the fastest lap of the race with a lap time of 1 minute 24.220 seconds. Despite his best efforts however, Colburn remained reluctant to surrender the race lead, with the pair finishing a mere 0.178 seconds apart from each other at the finish line.

“It was a good start, but James managed to get a better one,” explained Files. “I had the pace in the car and I was able to reel him in initially.”

“I was quicker through the back section and James was quicker through the technical bits, so it was quite an even match. Overall I had the pace, but he just defended too well, it was a good race.”

“Tomorrow I’ve just got to do it all again, but this time get a win, that’s very much the aim for the rest of the weekend.”

Round six of the AirAsia Renault Clio Cup will commence tomorrow (29th April), at 13:00, with live coverage via ITV4 and ITV4 HD.
